Slow Cooker Chai Apple Butter

Apple butter is a unique way to enjoy apple season and you can eat it with pretty much anything.

Spread chai apple butter on toast, stir a spoonful into your morning oatmeal, use it in place of maple syrup on pancakes, stir into barbecue sauce, or make your grilled cheese sandwich the stuff of dreams.

The best part? Your slow cooker ends up doing most of the work, which means you don’t even need to spend much time in the kitchen!

McIntosh, Honeycrisp and Gala are some of my go-to apples for cooking, but feel free to use any combination of apple varieties you prefer. For texture and more fiber, leave the peels on half of the apples.

Adding chai tea bags to the mix creates a whole new level of flavor to this apple butter recipe.

Store apple butter in the fridge, or use a proper canning process to make them safe to store at room temperature.

  • 5 medium cooking apples, cored, cut into quarters
  • 5 medium cooking apples, peeled, cored, cut into quarters
  • ¼ cup coconut sugar
  • 2- inch slice lemon peel
  • 10 bags chai tea


  1. Place apples, sugar, lemon peel, and tea bags in a 2 to 3-quart slow cooker.
  2. Cook on low for 12 hours or until apples are completely broken down.
  3. Remove lemon peel and tea bags.

Pro tip:

  • There are a lot of good apples that can be used to make apple butter. You can use one type or a combination: Cortland, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Jonathan, Jonagold, Braeburn, Granny Smith (tart), McIntosh, and Gala.
